In Colorado, Arapahoe Basin ski resort opened today and Loveland opens tomorrow. Wolf Creek is open on weekends. Best deal I’ve seen, other than a season pass (like the Epic pass – if you plan to ski a fair amount) is the 4 ticket deal at Loveland for $130 – no restrictions.

Our long weekend started Friday and lasted through Monday. It was marked by a definite change in weather that gave us cooler temps, our first hint of fall.

We did a hike on Goose Creek Trail in the Lost Creek Wilderness. Below area a few screen shot images of the day assembled using Google Earth. The full Google Earth KMZ file is here.

These screenshots include an image overlay of the Hayman Fire burn area. It might not be exact because I had to manually insert the image and size it as best as possible. This was a significant fire during the summer of 2002. Our drive route in lime green through the burn area was over dirt roads to the trailhead.

Overhead View with north orientation.
The initial 1/4 mile or so of the hike was through burn area to the canyon floor. After that, we enjoyed fairly lush vegetation throughout the hike. For full trail descriptions, I posted content and uploaded our hike to Wikiloc and Everytrail.

This post is a collection of activities last week. Images below.

The main event was being taken out by Romeo. He got his long lead wrapped around my leg and took off while on a walk, taking my feet out from under me. What made it worse was I was carrying a big post, so it crashed down on my leg. It still hurts, but icing has helped a lot. Sue was with me when it happened; she said it was like a cartoon wipeout, which meant it looked pretty funny.

That Romeo-wipeout curtailed my training for the week. I got a short ride in before it happened and some climbing. I missed a weight leg workout and a hike we had planned. I went heavy on my lifting this week. The ride had the feeling that I had gotten back into the groove with the bike – a long time since I had experienced that. Climbing is my forte and what I enjoy that most and the hills felt pretty good this week.

With the bum leg, I spent more time working on house projects. I finished repairing the driveway from rain downpours over the summer that have created some gulley’s. I also got a ton of chainsaw work done, taking down dead trees and branches. We had one very large tree that was dying. It took some chainsaw work to weaken the base and then I used the tractor to pull it down.

This week I am taking off from lifting and anything significant…a planned week’s rest. I hope to take most of the week off from work and spend the time tearing down part of a barn that needs to go. Hopefully, the leg will be back for some hiking Sue and I have planned for the Labor day weekend.

On Thursday, I did an out and back ride on my mountain bike this morning. The road was a combination of paved and dirt over 9.2 miles, 1100 feet total elevation gain and 55 minutes long.I only had 1 dog charge out towards me, but it stopped mid-way up its driveway, and it was only a cocker spaniel. A few weeks ago, a few mastifs came out, but they would not proceed past a line, from which I figured it was an electric fence. Good thing for me, as they were big dogs.I keep forgetting to take along some pepper spray, which I really should have. Since we live in the country, people tend to let their dogs run lose and chasing bikers is good entertainment for them.

Image below traces the route with the elevation and my heart rate displayed in the graph

On Tuesday, training consisted of uphill running intervals with biathlon practice in between and some rock climbing.

Shooting was 50% on target…not at all good, but better than I expected, since this is the first time shooting under heart rate stress in over 2 years. See attached image. Under calm conditions, I have recently been around 80%.

Intervals feel better this week, but still not great. Attached image charts heart rate and speed and I added shooting points and bouldering/climbing session in the graph.

Images below include the target and the speed and my heart rate displayed in the graph.

Google Earth KMZ file (Includes my heart rate log for the hike). Open in Google Earth, select the GPS log (Climb or Descent) in the Places menu, right click on it and select “Show Elevation Profile” You can toggle on the graph between elevation, speed and heart rate (only 2 will plot at same time).
