I always record the precipitation we receive at the house and recently did some annual totals to see where we ended up relative to average. I look at annual precipitation from October to October, because that month is usually when we get our first snow of the season. Since we received our first snow of the season On October 4 of this year, I went back a year to the October 4 2010 as my starting point. In order to convert snow to water equivalent, I use 8% multiplied by the snow received. Its not exact, but probably good enough to get a ballpark figure.

Here’s the results:

Rain: 9.41 inches

Snow: 47.75 inches

Total precipitation/water equivalent: 13.3 inches

Average for Sedalia, CO: 18.25

We were only at around 72% of average, which actually is better than I thought because it seemed like it was a dryer year. If you go 30 miles west of us, the mountains received record precipitation for the year due to the La Nina event. And, if you go 50 miles north of us, they too, received above average precipitation. We seemed to be just south of the dividing line for that above average moisture.

With La Nina returning this year, although not as strong as last year, according to early forecasts, we might have another dry year, but you never know.

Below are data graphs I’ve included.

I thought this was interesting. However, you don’t know the validity of the data collection – are they looking at natural disasters differently, are natural disasters being reported differently, etc. Natural Disasters in the United States, 1980 – 2011 | The Big Picture

I’m sick of seeing all those ski vids where people get good air, good lines and stick landings – do the rest of us ski like that? I don’t think so. This video is more my style…taking hard diggers, sometimes spending more time sliding down a slope on your butt and certainly not doing it with any elegance. Mt.
In Colorado, Arapahoe Basin ski resort opened today and Loveland opens tomorrow. Wolf Creek is open on weekends. Best deal I’ve seen, other than a season pass (like the Epic pass – if you plan to ski a fair amount) is the 4 ticket deal at Loveland for $130 – no restrictions.

Interesting article. I use to take lots of vitamins but then developed sensitivities to almost every vitamin supplement. I now only take code liver oil and magnesium and eat really well. More Evidence Against Vitamin Use

I saw our first signs of Fall today. We have a big maple and a birch stand of trees in front and I saw more leaves on the front driveway today. Some of the scrub oak bushes around the property are also starting to turn.

Our dry spell continues, however. No rain in more than a month now after an already dry summer. I am dragging a hose every day to put on the trees we have around the house. I hope we have a decent winter with snow, but from what I have read, that may not be the case with the La Nina weather pattern we are currently experiencing. See below for La Nina weather impacts.
